The Community Center for Environmental Education of the Directorate of the Galapagos National Park was built in 2005 with the economic contribution of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) of the Japanese Government, within the framework of bilateral cooperation between the Governments of Ecuador and Japan. 

On November 6, 2007, by Administrative Resolution No.0131, the name "Miguel Cifuentes Arias" was appointed, an act of singular importance in the history of the canton Santa Cruz and the Galapagos in general, the fact of having taken the name of one of the principal agents in the conservation of the Galapagos Islands and having represented our country internationally in events related to the conservation, preservation and protection of natural, terrestrial and marine resources, not only in the Galapagos but elsewhere the world. 

The Community Center for Environmental Education is a place for teaching and learning about different group goals of the Galapagos community; national visitors, foreigners and others, on the importance of conservation, protection and management of the Galapagos Marine Reserve, considered and designated as a World Heritage Site by the Heritage Committee of UNESCO in December 2001.

Exhibition Hall

The Environmental Education Community Center consists of a building (300 m² approximately) in the form of an octagon, for display of content; interpretive, educational, informational, interactive resources, dioramas, aquariums, etc., relating to the conservation, protection and management of natural resources of the Galapagos Marine Reserve. 

You may know and learn more about the different interior and marine environments of the Galapagos, learn about commercially important species, scientific research, for tourism, for recreation and for Environmental Education and Interpretation. 

It is open to all of the Galapagos community (students, teachers, artisans, farmers, businessman, housewives, fishermen, non-government organizations, journalists, naturalist guide groups and associations of the Galapagos National Park, etc.). In the days and times established. 

In the case of special groups: students, teachers, military, etc., from the mainland, who require a self-guided tour by personnel from the Project for Environmental Education and Interpretation of the GNP, a request should be communicated in writing, fax, email, or cell phone so that the staff is present and ready to fulfill its role. 

Hours of use: Monday to Friday: 08:00 to 12:30; 14:00 to 17:00 and Saturday from 08:00 to 12:00.

Conference Room

Adjoining the Exhibition Hall is the conference room, which has a capacity for 80 people comfortably and has bathrooms for men and women, storage space for audiovisual equipment and educational materials: books, magazines, manuals, encyclopedias, videos CD, DVD, etc. According to the Center's User Manual, only training events related to the conservation of natural resources; land, sea, island, and with education and human development. Events related to religion, politics and others are not authorized. 

For use of the conference room, an appeal to the Directorate of the Galapagos National Park is required, after which staff from the Program for Environmental Education and Interpretation shall proceed to give the pertinent documents and directions to the applicant, to sign the handling forms for the conference room with all the equipment applied for and later deliver information of the activity.

Multipurpose Area

Outdoor space that divides the Exhibition Hall and Conference Room can be used for short-term activities and/or exhibitions of arts and crafts, paintings, competitions, wall newspapers, etc.
